Open Gateway is a global initiative led by the GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communications Associations). Its main objective is to standardise and promote the capabilities of telecommunications networks. In Spain, the initiative is supported by MasOrange, Telefónica and Vodafone, as well as more than 60 operators worldwide.

Telefónica (a founding member of the project) has been one of the pioneers in promoting Open Gateway. It has participated in the creation of the first APIs, working with developers and companies to understand which services are most valuable.

Telefónica has evolved from being a mere connectivity provider to becoming a platform for innovative and open digital services through its network infrastructure.

Synergies with Delonia

Delonia works closely with Telefónica to find practical applications for the functions it is developing. In addition to studying possible use cases and drawbacks that each API may present, or focusing on a specific API.

When it came to an application for managing insurance and claims associated with mobile operators, Delonia focused on two APIs.

  • Location Verification: triangulates a device without GPS to facilitate location and apply anti-fraud measures based on positioning.
  • SIM Swap: allows applications to query the date or date range of the last SIM swap on a mobile line. This enables business processes for product sales, as well as the activation of customer features or services.

Delonia assists Telefónica in projects such as the implementation of policy terms and conditions alongside Telefónica Seguros, as well as consent mechanisms. It also applies to the analysis of insurance subscription formulas, anti-fraud measures, and digital insurance products.

Telefónica offers secure and efficient digital capabilities

Thanks to Open Gateway, companies will be able to verify user identities and device geolocation, prevent fraud, and benefit from new capabilities that will ultimately translate into greater security and a better user experience.

“Companies and developers can now access Telefónica’s network capabilities that were previously unavailable to third parties and easily integrate them into the digital services they offer their customers,” explained Óscar Louro, Director of Go-To-Market at Telefónica Open Gateway, in an interview with Europa Press.

Telefónica Open Gateway offers developers tools to innovate with security and scalability, and customers more secure, high-quality applications and services.

Future

The Open Gateway initiative has brought about a change in the digital ecosystem. In 2024, Telefónica formed a joint venture with 11 other operators and Ericsson to create and sell network APIs on a global scale. Telefónica Open Gateway has been developed in different countries such as Brazil, Spain, and Germany. The aim is to expand the initiative in Latin America.

These are the keys for the coming years

  • Marketing of two new APIs in Germany: API Number Verification and API SIM SWAP.
  • Launch of new APIs: beyond fraud and identity prevention. Such as Quality on Demand (QoD), Internet of Things (IoT), and Network Slicing.
  • Integration with next-generation technologies: such as 5G Standalone (5G SA) and Edge Computing. These technologies will enable new APIs and other applications (augmented reality, metaverse) to become a reality.
  • Multi-operator Innovation Lab: launched in collaboration with Vodafone, MasOrange, and i2CAT. This space allows for exploring use cases with interoperable APIs in a collaborative environment.

The ultimate goal is for Telefónica Open Gateway to move towards internationalisation, technological expansion and the creation of an interoperable ecosystem. This will enable developers and companies to build on network capabilities in a standardised, secure and collaborative manner.
